Synopsis
Following the events of The Batman (2022), Oz Cobb, aka the Penguin, attempts to take the reins of Gotham’s underworld.. Aside from the Bat-signal in the closing shot of the season finale, we didn’t get a cameo from Robert Pattinson in The Penguin. Colin Farrell fought hard to have his version of the Penguin smoke tobacco in The Batman (2022), but he failed.

In his own series, however, the character is portrayed as a casual tobacco user with a penchant for cigars.. An umbrella falls and the logo changes to the Warner Bros. logo.

The first installment is a direct sequel to Matt Reeves’ The Batman and I imagine those who haven’t seen the latter will be a bit lost. But I saw The Batman some time ago and this series did an admirable job of quickly reacquainting me with where the film left off without getting lost in a didactic recap. It also captures the film’s aesthetic and grim tone well, though the series has many more moments of sly levity than the film.
But so far, it’s a great start
As in The Batman, Colin Farrell does an excellent job of portraying the Penguin as a stereotypical mafia “street guy”: uncouth, ungodly, moody, and quick to violence; but also clever, cunning, and able to see through people. The character may have absolutely nothing to do with the comic version, but he’s interesting in his own way. I have my doubts about whether the show should give the Penguin a teenage sidekick; and I don’t know if the Penguin’s machinations will be enough for a full season.
