Synopsis
Investigating judge Iman struggles with paranoia amid political unrest in Tehran
When his gun goes missing, he suspects his wife and daughters and takes draconian measures that strain family ties as societal norms break down. Director Mohamed Rasulof was originally scheduled to attend the 2023 Cannes Film Festival as a member of the Un Certain Regard jury.
On May 12, 2024, Rasuloff announced that he had managed to escape Iran and was in an undisclosed location in Europe
However, he was arrested in July 2022 after criticizing the government’s crackdown on protesters in the southwestern Iranian city of Abadan over a deadly building collapse. On May 8, 2024, Rasuloff’s lawyer announced that he had been sentenced to eight years in prison, as well as flogging, fines, and confiscation of property.
Overall, the film is captivating and it tries to portray what happened in Iran in 2022
On May 24, 2024, Rasuloff attended the film’s premiere in Cannes and held up two photos of the film’s actors, Soheil Golestani and Misa Zare, on the red carpet. It contains a lot of symbolic scenes that I’m not sure if there were good intentions behind them or not.
The screen reproduction has a lot of flaws
Very good acting from less famous actors and actresses and a good suspension, but overall this film evokes a lot of hatred towards men (not very fair) because I think the director and the people of Iran have a lot of emotions (which is fair) about what they experienced. The gun thief’s motivations were not explained, the father suddenly turning into a monster didn’t make sense, the girls suddenly showed a lot of PTSD on the part of the father, but why?
If this film receives an international award, it is solely because there is no convincing overall script under today’s conditions, but for the Iranian level this is a 7+ film, internationally it is above average
