In the timeless town of Macondo, seven generations of the Buendía family navigate love, oblivion, and the need to deal with their past and destiny. This is Netflix’s most expensive project to date in Latin America, with Colombian and indigenous groups. Communities producing props and sets for the series… 100 años de soledad is one of the greatest literary achievements in the Spanish language. Its style is unmatched and its scope beyond imagination. Its characters are so well-drawn that any screenwriter would have no problem writing them for the screen. However, the seemingly insurmountable problem with adapting the novel was its length. Condensing a hundred years of family and national history was an impossible task. Almost 60 years after its publication, the novel has found a cinematic home on Netflix. Only streaming can do this, and the first 2 episodes are truly promising. Great photography, art direction, and respect for the characters. The narration is essential to make García Márquez’s beautiful prose appear from time to time. The plot unfolds smoothly with richness and depth. I loved it and was a little skeptical that GGM’s magical world could translate to the screen. Wall is a success so far in my book. “One Hundred Years of Solitude” is one of the biggest TV and streaming premieres of the month. Check out our December calendar for more!
