Dreaming of escaping the bleakness of their hometown, two teenagers form a unique bond at a local modeling school, where the prospect of a better life pushes girls to violate their bodies in increasingly extreme ways. First, I’d like to say that “Akiplesa” (Toxic) was without a doubt the crown jewel of this year’s Locarno Film Festival. Saule Bliuvaite masterfully crafted a narrative that resonated with festival audiences, offering a story that appealed to their sensibilities in a style they could easily embrace. I was already an admirer of Bliuvaite’s work, as his short film “Limuzinas” (2020) intrigued me. My confidence in his directorial abilities was unshakable. However, I must confess to being a little surprised when I noticed the keyword “horror” in the festival program, alongside the labels “coming-of-age” and “drama.” Describing the film without giving away spoilers is a challenge, but Bliuvaite handled the situation with remarkable finesse. The film’s portrayal of 14-year-old teenagers’ anxieties, etched deep into their being from their shaking hands to the dim light in their eyes, is deeply moving, thanks in large part to the talented young cast. Their performances are raw and authentic, capturing the vulnerability and confusion of youth with heartbreaking honesty. One can only hope that after its festival run, the film will land a wide-ranging distribution deal that will allow it to reach a worldwide audience. It deserves to be seen and appreciated for its unflinching portrayal of the complexities of adolescence and the insidious nature of social pressure. Bliuvaite’s direction is poised and confident, showing a deft hand in balancing the film’s darker elements with moments of tenderness and vulnerability. The film’s visual style is striking. Its muted color palette and sober compositions create an atmosphere of unease and foreboding. The soundtrack, a haunting mix of electronic and orchestral elements, further enhances the film’s emotional impact. ‘Akiplesa’ is a film that stays with you long after the credits roll. It is a testament to the power of cinema to explore the darkest corners of the human experience with sensitivity, intuition and a touch of poetic grace. It is a film worth watching and discussing, a reminder that even in the face of adversity, the human spirit can find a way to persevere and ultimately triumph.
